The Admissions Office Story:
The Senior Year ritual of applying to college is stressful and difficult. Few families realize that the stress, itself, is often reflected in the quality of the application and can be a drawback to acceptance. While private college counseling and SAT tutoring have become a multi-million dollar industry, issues of family, mood and temperament surrounding the preparation of the application, itself, is often overlooked. Intangibles such as optimism, enthusiasm and family teamwork do come through in the application.
"Make no mistake about it", says Stuart Bochner, the head of the "Admissions Office" a College Application Coaching firm in New Jersey. "The family atmosphere and the spirit and temperament in which college applications and essays are prepared have a huge impact on the success of the completed application. And like SAT scores, these factors, too, can be positively influenced by proper coaching and training."
With tuition for a bachelor's degree ranging from $40,000 to well over $100,000, families want their students to have a superior college experience and obtain a degree that rewards them both financially and in self-fulfillment. But first there is the daunting task of submitting a winning application. Within a short, two month period, high school seniors and their parents will have to complete, in nearly perfect form, anywhere from 7 to 15 separate and different application booklets, write one to four new essays for each of them, keep track of submission deadlines and make sure others, like teachers writing letters of recommendation, meet their deadlines, as well.
In addition to the work involved, tensions run high as parents and children bicker, accuse and procrastinate. "The atmosphere in a typical 'senior year home'" says Mr. Bochner, "is hardly conducive to the production of quality applications. At best, it results in everyone just trying to 'get the job done and out' and at worst, produces incomplete or poorly prepared documents."
And where family stress becomes a serious issue, The Admissions Office applies its life coaching techniques. "There is a process whereby the specific anxieties, conflicts and worries associated with completing college applications can all but disappear. Both the students and their parents can learn techniques. And after the stress dissipates, quality emerges."
